Detour Day 4

Honningsvåg to Olderfjord

A late start today, which was actually pretty good as the weather forecast promised lots of rain at our destination, so not really any reason to hurry straight into it… We decided to have a pretty short ride today, only the 100 kms to get to Olderfjord. The first three days of cycling has been pretty rough and we definitely need to give our bodies a chance to recuperate from the unaccustomed load.

The main hurdle today was the subsea tunnel connecting the island of North Cape to the mainland. Nordkapptunellen is 3 km steep downhill, 1 km flat (this point is 230 meters below sea-level) , then 3 km uphill, approximately 8%. Luckily, the traffic was light, and there were no issues or scary situations! We also caught some lucky draft of a group who are also doing the Norway Traverse.

At about the half way point our luck ran out and the rain came in. On with the gore-tex and shoe covers. While it’s annoying to ride with rain paints, the alternative of becoming soaking wet and trying to dry out our clothes inside the tent, is just out of the question. That being said, upon arrival at Olderfjord we immediately booked a cabin. Thus far this has been more credit packing than bikepacking… But hey, it’s all in the name of recovery!
